Join the BSU Peer Educators, Outreach Education, Sigma Pi, and Phi Sigma Sigma in welcoming Dr. Howard London, former BSU Provost and VP of Academic affairs, as our guest speaker for A Promise to Adam on Tuesday November 14th at 6:30pm in the RCC Ballroom.  Adam was Howard London’s son who died tragically at age 17 in a car crash on August 23rd, 2010.  Hear Howard’s story about how Adam’s death affected those around him and learn about the dangers of distracted driving.cropped-promise-to-adam-2-023 (1)

Our Promise to Adam:

Adam’s parents have created a promise that everyone should fulfill so no other family has to go through the pain that they have.  This is our promise to Adam:

In Honor of Adam – And You

I promise:

  1. Never to ride in a car without using a seat belt.
  2. Never to drive too fast, because where I’m going will be there, whether I’m 5 minutes early or fifty minutes late.
  3. Never to drive after drinking, even the smallest amount, because I cannot understand how impaired I may be.
  4. Never to drive after putting anything in my body that may limit my ability to think, understand and react.
  5. Never to text while I drive, because the message is never more important than my life.
  6. And, perhaps hardest of all, to stop my friends when they try to do any of the above.  Take away their keys; call their parents; call a cab; wrestle them to the ground, if necessary.  Whatever it takes.

Tips for Preventing Distracted Driving:

-Finish getting dressed and putting on your makeup before you get in the car!

-Make sure that if you are eating, it isn’t going to get messy and distract you. Your best bet is to eat your snack or meal before you start driving.

-Don’t get distracted by your electronic devices!  Shut off your phone before you get in the car.  Set up your GPS before you start driving.

Other Driving Safety Tips:

-Don’t drink and drive.  Have a trusted sober driver bring you home, take public transportation, or don’t drink.

-Avoid driving if you are exhausted.  If you’re tired pull over, don’t try and rush home.

-Have your car prepared for whatever weather you are going to be driving in.

-Drive the speed limit.

-Wear your seat belt!
