Why should I Join the Wellness Walks on Campus?trails sun

There are many benefits to daily walking. It is a great way to improve or maintain your overall personal health. Walking for 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle control. Also, it can reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers. In order to improve your health, physical activity doesn’t have to be vigorous or completed for long periods. Walking is a low impact and free exercise that can be done anywhere and at any time of the day.

How can I Join the Wellness Walks on Campus?

Are you ready for the approaching warm weather and ready to get outside? Come join the wellness walks each Wednesday (through April 26, 2017). We meet at the rounded steps between ECC and Stonehouse Residence Hall at 4:30pm to walk the campus trails. This can be a great way to relieve stress when you have a big exam or paper due date fast approaching.

Tips to Motivate You to Walk for Enjoyment

1. Wear a Fitbit or other activity tracker daily. They are useful to measure your movement throughout the day. You can compare one day to another or compare yourself to recommended weekly exercise. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise to achieve health benefits. Track your exercise and compete with yourself or with friends!

2. Make walking part of your routine. It can help to walk at the same time each day. Some people find that it is easier to make it a regular activity if you stick to a specific time, for example right after work or class. Another option is to keep an activity diary or log to stick to your routine.

3. Wear comfortable footwear. Walking is a low-cost and effective form of exercise. It can be completed at any time of the day and anywhere. It is one of the easiest ways to get the exercise needed to stay healthy.

4. Find a walking partner or join a walking club. Ask a friend or family member to walk with you to stay motivated. Daily dog walks are a great way to keep up with your routine. It makes it difficult to skip a walk when someone is counting on you to go with them.

5. Explore new areas. You are more likely to stay motivated if you explore new areas in your community. Schedule time to take a trip to a new park or hiking trails. You can enjoy the new scenery while getting your exercise.

6. Set a goal to participate in an organized fitness walk. Find a local walk in your area like a 5K run/walk for charity. By having a specific date for a walk to participate in, it will keep you more motivated to stay on track and keep moving on a daily basis.

Walking is a great and easy way to improve your overall health. Try following some of these tips to become more active and healthy.
